How to buy a used piano

Are you looking for a piano but don’t want to invest thousands of dollars in a new one? Consider these factors before making a used piano purchase.

1. The first thing you should do when looking for a used piano is visit a piano store in your area. This will give you a good perspective on what you might expect to find when looking for a piano. Piano stores generally have used pianos that they have taken on trade or consigned from people in your area. A salesperson can then tell you what brands are considered good and what brands to stay away from.

2. Keeping in mind that the value of pianos is determined by age and condition, locate a piano technician who can inspect your potential purchase.  This is the most important step, as a piano can look like it is in good condition, but require more repairs to make it a tunable piano than the piano is worth. Replacement of the pin block that holds the tuning pins at the correct tension can cost thousands of dollars. A good way to find a technician is through either your local store, tuner, or from the Piano Technicians Guild.

3. Finally, buy a piano that is in tune. After all, how can you tell if you like the way it sounds if it does not sound the way it should from the start. Pianos that are out of tune indicate an owner has not provided regular maintenance to the piano. Happy Hunting and remember " Life is more fun when you play music"
